Community Health Promoters Trained on Maternal Health and Proper Nutrition
Community Health Promoters (CHPs) recently participated in a training session focused on improving maternal health in the community. The training emphasized the importance of proper nutrition for pregnant mothers, safe delivery practices, and the need for expectant mothers to seek care from qualified health professionals at health facilities.
Proper Nutrition During Pregnancy
One of the key topics discussed was the importance of proper nutrition for pregnant mothers. A healthy and balanced diet plays a vital role in the growth and development of the unborn baby while also maintaining the mother’s health. Pregnant women are encouraged to eat a variety of foods, including fruits, vegetables, proteins, whole grains, and foods rich in iron and vitamins.
The training also addressed harmful practices such as eating clay soil during pregnancy. While some pregnant women may experience cravings, consuming soil can be harmful because it may contain bacteria, parasites, or harmful substances that can affect both the mother and the unborn child. Community Health Promoters were advised to educate families about these risks and encourage healthier alternatives.
Importance of Visiting the Hospital
Another important lesson from the training was the need for pregnant mothers to attend regular antenatal clinic visits at health facilities. Early and consistent visits help healthcare providers monitor the health of both the mother and the baby. These visits also help in detecting and managing possible complications during pregnancy.
Safe Delivery Practices
The training strongly emphasized that expectant mothers should deliver in health facilities where skilled health workers are available. Midwives and birth attendants were reminded not to assist expectant mothers in delivering at home. Delivering in a hospital ensures that trained professionals and proper medical equipment are available to manage emergencies and safeguard the lives of both the mother and the newborn.
Role of Community Health Promoters
Community Health Promoters play a crucial role in educating families and promoting healthy practices within the community. After the training, CHPs are better equipped to guide pregnant women on proper nutrition, discourage harmful practices such as eating clay soil, encourage regular hospital visits, and promote safe delivery in health facilities.
Upcoming Free Medical Camps
During the training, Calistus Wekesa, the founder and Executive Director of Tuwan Highway Mission Hospital, also announced an upcoming plan to organize free surgical camps for the community. These camps are expected to provide essential health services and increase access to medical care for residents, especially those who may not easily reach health facilities.
Maternal health education is essential for building healthier communities. By empowering Community Health Promoters with knowledge and skills, communities can ensure that pregnant mothers receive the care, support, and information they need for a safe and healthy pregnancy. The planned free medical camps will further strengthen access to healthcare and improve the wellbeing of the community.
